Top 3 Warm and Inviting Design Styles

|
June 21, 2022

When it comes to design styles, there are endless possibilities. There are over 20 different interior design styles and those are just the popular ones. So how do you start to begin deciding which style is right for you and your space? The most important question you have to answer is, "How do you want to feel when you or your guests step into the room?" In this article, we are focusing on that feeling of warm and inviting and the top 3 styles to help you achieve it.

You can go classic with traditional design, or earthy with rustic design. Maybe you are finding yourself stuck between the best of two designs that you love equally - don't worry, there's a style for that! But how do you know which style is right for you? And once you decide on a style, how do you incorporate the design elements to make your space warm and inviting?

Let's take a deeper look at these three warm and inviting yet completely different design styles: traditional, rustic, and transitional.

Traditional

Colors: When it comes to traditional design, you can’t go wrong with classic colors like white, black, and navy. But if you want to add a pop of color, consider hues like hunter green, ruby red, or royal blue.

Fabrics: For a traditional design style, look for fabrics with classic prints like stripes or polka dots. Solid fabrics are also traditional and can be used for everything from upholstery to drapery.

Furniture: Traditional design is all about classic furniture pieces like wingback chairs and chesterfield sofas. Don’t be afraid to mix different wood tones to add visual interest.

Accents: The finishing touches in a traditional design are all about elegance. Look for accent pieces like crystal lamps, gilt-framed mirrors, and silver vases.

Rustic

Colors: When it comes to rustic design, natural colors are key. Think earth tones like brown, green, and gray. You can also use pops of fall colors like reds and oranges.

Fabrics: For a rustic design style, look for fabrics with nature-inspired prints like nature, plaids, and stripes. Most solid fabrics that are also considered to be rustic have a textured burlap look to them. These fabrics can be used from upholstery to drapery.

Furniture: Rustic design is all about furniture pieces that are made from natural materials like wood and stone. Look for tables, chairs, and dressers that are either made from these materials or have a rustic finish, much like you would see in a log cabin

Accents: The finishing touches in a rustic design are all about bringing the outdoors in from a cowboy/western perspective. Look for accent pieces like pottery with a earthy glaze, baskets filled with greenery, and metal sculptures.

Transitional

Colors: When it comes to design styles, transitional design is a mix of both traditional and contemporary design. This means that you can use colors from either design style. Some popular transitional colors include neutrals like taupe, gray, and white. You can also use pops of color like yellow, blue, or green.

Fabrics: For a transitional design style, look for a mix of both traditional and contemporary fabric prints. Polka dots, plaids, and stripes are all considered to be traditional prints. Geometric, ikat, and animal prints are all considered to be contemporary prints. As for solids, anything goes!

Furniture: Transitional design is all about mixing both traditional and contemporary furniture pieces. You might see a traditional sofa with a contemporary coffee table, or a contemporary chair with a traditional dresser. It’s all about mixing and matching to create your own unique space.

Accents: The finishing touches in transitional design can come from either the traditional or contemporary design style. If you want a more traditional space, look for accents like lamps with crystal bases, gilt-framed mirrors, and vases filled with fresh flowers. If you want a more contemporary space, look for accents like metal sculptures, abstract paintings, and photo frames.

Now that you know a little bit more about these three design styles, it’s time to decide which one is right for you. Consider the colors, fabrics, furniture, and accents that you’re drawn to. Do you want a classic design with traditional elements? Or are you looking for something with a more rustic feel? Maybe you are feeling a little torn between two different styles.

No matter which design style you choose, there are ways to make it warm and inviting. By adding in cozy fabrics, organic materials, and colorful accents, you can create a space that feels like home.
