Texture, Texture, Texture! Why Texture is Essential to Luxury Interior Design

June 8, 2021

You take a step back to admire your hard work.

You've spent weeks agonizing over colors and measurements and different types of furniture. You've had dreams about where the sofa would go and whether or not that painting in the hallway is hanging straight.

And now, it's exactly as you dreamed it would be.

But—hold on.

Something's not quite right. You can't put your finger on what, but you know something is missing.

Need a hint? It's texture.

You can't ignore texture in interior design. It can have a tremendous effect on how a room looks and feels.

Read on to learn more about why texture is such an integral part of luxury interior design.

Texture Creates an Impact

Have you ever been captivated by an incredible work of art? The way the painting comes alive? The way it transports you to another world, eliminating all of your problems and bringing your own world to a complete standstill?

That's because fine artists use texture, too!

They use texture as a tool to create depth and evoke distinct emotions in their work. So, it comes as no surprise that texture is an essential component when it comes to other types of design as well—namely luxury interior design.

Textured designs are both visually and tactually stimulating, and as a result, are the key element in putting the finishing touch on your beautiful home.

It adds depth, transforming an ordinary room into an exceptional space that invites you in and complements your mood.

It draws our attention to the focal points in the room, emphasizing the features that we deem to be the most important so that when someone walks into the room, their first thought is "wow".

Texture in Interior Design Creates Harmony

Are you struggling to find a way to balance the individual components of your room?

Don't stress. Just think texture!

It's hard to overstate the role that the perfect rug or a leather armchair can play in tying everything together.

Play with various textures that suit your color theme and then sit back and reap the rewards. By adding multiple textures that complement each other to your room, you unify the individual elements to create one harmonious space for you to enjoy.

While maintaining a particular color theme or pattern can create a cohesive design, texture completes the look by providing the necessary balance.

But, proceed with caution!

It's easy to create an environment that is so harmonious and so unified, you end up with a room that has no personality whatsoever.

Adding texture avoids this issue and puts the focus on the unique charm of the room and its subtle accents.

It Controls the Temperature

Okay, okay, texture can't literally change the temperature of the room. It's good, but it's not that good. A suede pillow won't magically turn your home into a tropical paradise.

It can, however, create the illusion of warmth in the room. The sort of warmth you feel inside when you're snuggled up on the sofa with a good book. Texture calls attention to the overall mood of a room—warm and inviting, or cool and contemporary.

If you want to create a more modern feel, use smooth or shiny surfaces, such as granite flooring or a glass coffee table. Surfaces like these that reflect more light will help accentuate the cutting-edge look you're trying to achieve.

If a rustic cottage is more your speed, opt for rough or coarse materials that reflect less light, such as a soft carpet or wooden floors, to create a warmer, more intimate atmosphere.

It Gives the Room Character

Regardless of whether you choose to use texture to build a more modern abode or to establish your very own cozy cabin, one thing is for sure: texture gives your home personality. Depth. Individuality.

And while we're on the subject of individuality, it's important to mention one more thing: don't take the textures that are already in the room for granted.

If your living room has a brick fireplace or the master bedroom has crown molding, use those characteristics to your advantage! Texture is more than just a faux fur blanket and a sequined pillow tossed onto the couch.

It's about complementing (and creating!) the focal points in a room and creating an environment which brings out the best in your home.

It's about constructing a luxury living space that is both pleasing to the eye and to the soul.

It's about finding the materials to suit your mood. Your emotions. Your life.

It Doesn't Have to Be Impractical

Texture designing doesn't mean you have to go out and make a load of impractical purchases.

While you're shopping, keep in mind how the items will be used, and whether they will be a positive addition to your household, or an ineffective nuisance.

Before you splurge on glistening marble countertops for your modern kitchen, do your research. Marble is extremely porous, and will easily stain if it comes into contact with anything acidic for too long.

This doesn't just mean more cleaning for you (although that is, of course, a bummer).

It also means that the impressive look you were originally hoping for is almost immediately ruined just because you spilled a bit of lemon juice on the counter.

The point is to use texture to your advantage. Use it to improve your living space, not make your life a misery.

Design with your lifestyle in mind. Part of creating a luxurious home for yourself is to make your day-to-day life easier. The less we have to do to keep our home comfortable, the better—right?

Final Thoughts

Find balance. Find harmony. Find unity and cohesion in the design of your home, and use texture to guide you.

Let texture lead you towards the home of your dreams. Let it brighten and warm your space. Let it modernize and smooth any bumps in the road.

Don't discount the importance of texture in interior design. Channel your inner artist, get touchy-feely, and have fun with it!
