Bold and Dramatic Black Walls Can Transform Your Dallas Area Home

There are colors that cause a room to pop, and then there are colors that cause you to stop in your tracks.

No one ever said that painting walls black is for the faint-hearted, but it shouldn't be cause for avoidance, either. In fact, when it's used correctly (and yes, often sparingly) this bold and dramatic color can transform your Dallas area home into a luxurious fashion statement.

But let's acknowledge some basics about painting your walls black right from the start. In general, black engenders the wow factor best when:

Modern Dining Room by Lenexa Interior Designers & DecoratorsKathleen Ramsey, Allied ASID
  • Paired with light-colored floors and furniture
  • The room enjoys a fair amount of natural sunlight
  • Large, contrasting wall art plays off the color to good effect

Now you can move with confidence and:

  • Choose one wall in a room to display this dominant color. In a bedroom, it probably would be the wall abutting the bed. But the interior walls of a window seat painted black would make a bold statement, too. Add an upscale touch by framing the area with custom molding in silver-gray or white.
  • Stop visitors cold by using black on any wall where you have an open-back bookcase. (And if you don't, you can always pop out the back to let the black walls show through.) Embellish the sides of the case with gold, silver or white paint for a truly stunning effect.
  • Make black functional by putting black chalkboard paint to use in a children's room or family room (to practice math problems) or in the kitchen (to display the week's menu). Even a small chalkboard will allow you to see how black can become the room's focal point.
